Ruto hails youth as Kenya’s greatest asset on International Youth Day

The president cited the Harambee Stars as an example of young Kenyans leading with passion and creativity
President William Ruto has declared that Kenya’s most valuable resource is not its minerals or natural wealth, but its young people. Speaking in Kakamega on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, during International Youth Day celebrations, he praised the knowledge, energy, innovation, and expertise of the youth, calling them “the single most decisive force that will shape Kenya’s destiny.”
“For generations, young people have been described as leaders of tomorrow, but in truth, they are the builders of today, the architects of the future, and the driving engine powering Kenya’s rise to greatness,” Ruto said.
He cited the Harambee Stars as an example of young Kenyans leading with passion and creativity, noting that their determination mirrors the broader potential of the country’s youth.
The President reaffirmed his government’s constitutional obligation to equip young people with quality education, relevant skills, and meaningful opportunities while protecting them from harmful practices.
He pointed to initiatives like the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme, funded by the World Bank, which aims to support over 100,000 youths nationwide through business grants and mentorship.
From September 2025, 70 youths in each ward will receive Sh50,000 to start small businesses, a step he said will help tackle unemployment and promote entrepreneurship.
“We are here to celebrate the energy and creativity of young people, amplifying their immense contribution to our bold national transformation agenda,” Ruto said.
However, his relationship with young Kenyans has faced strains. Recent protests led by Gen Z over the high cost of living and controversial laws have underscored growing frustration.
While the government has dismissed the demonstrations as politically driven, analysts warn of a deeper legitimacy challenge that demands open dialogue with the youth.
Still, Ruto remains upbeat about their role in shaping the nation’s future. “Our constitution commands us to invest in our young people, and I see their potential everywhere,” he said. “They are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but the builders of today.”
